It is with heavy hearts that we share the recent passing of Joky van Dieten, one of the great pioneers in the world of crystal skulls, and in many other areas. Joky became a celebrity in the European racing world, as one of the first female race car drivers in Europe in 1954, driving for Ferrari at age 22. Joky van Dieten loved to play the harp in concert performances, she also renovated a 15th century castle, as well as a British minesweeper ship. Her adventures led her to travel the globe to bring together one of the world's most important collections of significant and ancient life-size crystal skulls, whose stories are as fascinating as Joky's own life story - the “youngest” crystal skull in her collection was carved in 1926, which still makes it one of the oldest known crystal skulls in the world today.

Joky van Dieten was compelled to collect more crystal skulls so that she could increase their power to heal people and improve our world, and she allowed her life-size crystal skulls to be exhibited in museums so more people could experience their special energies. As the eyes of the world are transfixed on the Mauna Loa Volcano disbursing miles of lava in Hawaii, one cannot help but marvel at the stunning river of fiery molten rock that is both a source of destruction and creation at the same time.  The Hawaiian Islands were created by the lava from volcanic eruptions emerging from the ocean, and civilization on these islands continues to be threatened with the destructive force of volcanic fire.

This hot lava has temperatures of over 2000 degrees Fahrenheit (over 1000 degrees Celcius). In fact, the color of the lava gives you an indication on the heat: "Yellow indicates a temperature of about 1,000–1,200 degrees Celsius (1,832–2,192 degrees Fahrenheit). Orange indicates a slightly cooler temperature of about 800–1,000 degrees Celsius (1,472–1,832 degrees Fahrenheit). Red is even cooler, about 600–800 degrees Celsius (1,112–1,472 degrees Fahrenheit)." 

Every time a volcanic eruption occurs, new rock is added to the surrounding area. Technically, Lava becomes the newest pieces of rock on the planet.  Flowing basaltic lava has a temperature of about 1200°C, but it cools quickly when it’s exposed to ambient air. So quickly, in fact, that instead of forming a hard rock that you would normally imagine, the lava you scoop up with a rock hammer cools to a fragile piece of volcanic glass.

Solidification of molten rock is called crystallization. Igneous rocks that cool underground cool more slowly, giving mineral crystals time to grow within the rock. In these rocks, the different minerals are large and easy to see with the naked eye. Igneous rocks that crystallize at the earth’s surface tend to cool much more quickly and have much smaller crystals. A volcanic rock made entirely of glass, called obsidian, forms from lava that cools with little to no crystals at all. If lava is flung into the air during an eruption, or if it comes in contact with water, the edges of the lava will also cool to form a glass.

When volcanoes violently erupt, many gas bubbles form in the lava, so it crystallizes into rocks filled with holes where the gas used to be. Rocks with holes formed from gas trapped in the lava are called vesicular rocks. An example of this is pumice, which has a vesicular texture caused by escaping gas. Amazingly, when lava cools, it becomes very light.
